Compaq Computer Corp is to build its own line of high-end desk-top laser printers using engines from the Tokyo-based Fuji Xerox Co joint venture of Rank Xerox Ltd and Fuji Photo Film Co, the Wall Street Journal believes. Compaq is expected to design the printers itself, making them in the US and Germany, and launching the first products in May. The paper expects the company to go after the 17 page per minute end of the market dominated by the Hewlett-Packard Co LaserJet IIIsi, and to design the printers to be used as print servers in networks. Laxington, Kentucky-based Lexmark International Inc confirms its own plans to enter the high-end market.
