Compaq Computer Corp will adopt a policy of rebates for those purchasing printers with low-end personal computers, according to reports. The new policy, the details of which are expected to be announced on May 19, is a direct attempt to compete on even ground with market-share hungry Hewlett-Packard Co. HP already offers consumers a $150 rebate when purchasing a complete desktop system for about $1,000. Compaq will now offer similar incentives to its customers by offering discounted ink jet printers from Lexmark International Group Inc with cheap PCs. HP has previously said it plans to be the number one personal computer vendor by 2000, and the leveraging of its top-selling line of printers has already helped it climb to second place in the home consumer market.
