COMPAQ OVERTAKE IBM AND APPLE IN SHIPMENTS

Compaq Computer Corp bounded over IBM Corp and Apple Computer Inc in US personal computer shipments for the first time in the first quarter of this year, Dataqust reckons: it gives Compaq about 980,000 machines world-wide in the first quarter, compared with 955,000 for IBM and 865,000 for Apple; Packard Bell Electronics Inc nearly doubled its market share from a year earlier to an estimated 9%; and Hewlett-Packard Co took 2.6%, up from 1.4%; Gateway 2000 Inc is fifth in the list with 5.6% of unit shipments, overtaking Dell Computer Corp with 4.6%, about the same as AST Research Inc; Zenith Data Systems had 3.5%, and Toshiba Corp waves the flag for Japan Inc with a 2.6% share; figures by value may differ.
