Compaq Computer Corp yesterday came out with the Compaq ProLiant 4500 server, describing it as the ideal application server for Microsoft Corp Windows NT environments. It also added the Compaq Standby Recovery Server option that uses a hot standy as back-up, and NetFlex-3, a network interface controller with optional support for both emerging 100Mbps Ethernet protocols. The SmartStart v2.20 integration tool for installing and integrating servers now supports Oracle Workgroup Server and Cheyenne ARCserver for Windows NT, with support for UnixWare 2 planned. Insight Manager v2.40 has also been enhanced. The ProLiant 4500 is designed to support up to 1,440 users, and starts at $10,600 with one Pentium. It takes up to four Pentiums and up to 1Gb memory, up to four hard disks Fast-Wide SCSI-2 input-output devices, and over 300Gb total storage. It is claimed to support all industry-standard symmetric multiprocessing operating systems and is available in both tower and rack-mountable models. Compaq also sees it used as a network server with NetWare 4.1 SMP. The ProLiant 4500 is available immediately, Compaq said.
