Compaq Computer Corp launched the Proliant 3000 server yesterday, the first server to use an Intel Pentium II server clocked at 333MHz and capable of supporting up to 3Gb of system memory, the company claimed. Competitive systems can only manage 1Gb, it said. With prices starting at $4,500, the system supports up to two Pentium IIs and up to 109.2Gb of internal hot-pluggable storage. The systems will support upgrades to the forthcoming Slot 2 Pentium II processors designed to replace the Pentium Pro range and supporting SDRAM and 100MHz GTL Gunning Transceiver Logic bus technology. Along with the servers, Compaq upgraded its systems management tools, Insight Manager 4.0 and SmartStart 4.0 for Windows NT and NetWare-based servers, for better monitoring and control.
