We didn’t hear too many jaws dropping at the news earlier this week that Compaq Computer Corp now has machines in its product line that cost over $200,000 fully configured, but it’s a pretty striking departure for a company that started its life as a luggable personal computer specialist. But its ambitions to become a full line computer company are being taken seriously in the right quarters these days, and Electronic Data Systems Corp has given Compaq a contract for over 8,500 servers and internetworking products for General Motors Corp dealerships, and Compaq values the contract at $100m. The machines for the GM Access system will run Microsoft Corp Windows NT and will link General Motors’ world headquarters in Detroit to its entire North American dealership network. The servers will be Compaq ProSignia 300s.
