By CBR Staff Writer

Compaq Computer Corp has signed a letter of intent with China’s leading electronics company for joint manufacture personal computers starting later this year. Under the 11-year pact, Compaq and Stone (Group) Corp are to manufacture desktop personal computers and printed circuit boards in Stone facilities in the special economic zone of Shenzhen, across the border from Hong Kong. Stone, which was established in 1984, last year had sales of about $522.6m. Compaq says it will initially focus on the domestic market, but the partners plan eventually to export some computers to other Asian countries.
