Compaq Computer Corp is forecasting that the European personal computer market will double by 1992, by which time it will be about the same size as the US market: the company is basing its forecast on the expectation that white collar workers will be between 40% and 60% of the European workforce by 1992, against 10% to 20% now: Compaq reckons that it was fourth in terms of dollar value market share in Europe in 1988 with 7.1%, behind IBM, 27%, Olivetti with 8.6% and Apple Computer with 7.8% – but this year it expects its international sales to grow at least 25% this year from the $809m it did in 1988.
