Compaq Computer Corp was yesterday declining comment on a report in Computer Retail Week that it planned to pioneer the flat panel screen in desktop computers. The trade weekly reckons the Houston company has a version of its Presario desktop line that uses a SuperSharp thin-film transistor liquid crystal display in place of the usual cathode ray tube, and that it will be part of the company’s summer product announcements. The machine is said to have a 12.1 flat-panel display with the same viewing area as a traditional 14 screen, and is expected to feature a 200MHz or 150MHz Intel Corp Pentium, radio-frequency remote mouse and a four-disk CD changer, priced at some $3,500. The machine, with its clip-on keyboard and weighing 26 lbs, is expected to be billed as a desktop that can easily be transported, the paper said. Compaq told Reuters that the company plans to launch a series of new products beginning in June, but declined to give details.
