Heading off concerns about the demise of Tru64 Unix, Compaq Computer Corp says the operating system won’t now be ported to Intel’s IA-64. It will stay on Alpha and remain the company’s high-end Unix choice of record. SCO UnixWare and the Monterey follow-on will be resold on Intel. It looks like another get real action following the ascendancy of Michael Capellas to CEO, and shareholders must be praying for more. A couple of weeks ago Compaq’s Windows NT on Alpha fantasy was abandoned in a similar coup de grace. Compaq says it will preview some new Alpha chips and a technology roadmap at Microprocessor Design Forum.
