Compaq Computer Corp is building a consulting and systems integration arm as part of the push to become a full-capability computer company despite the company’s denials last fall, says Graham Kemp, an analyst at G2 Research Inc of Mountain View in an item picked up by Online Today, adding the speed with which they are able to build, however, will need to take into consideration several factors, not all of which are under Compaq’s control. The type of people they’re looking to hire are part of an extremely competitive market. By the end of the year Compaq expects the number of professional services personnel at its support offices to grow to 100, and some Compaq executives say that number will more than double next year. But while there are definitely more resources going forward to sharpen our integration skills, says Greg Young, senior business manager, North America, desktop marketing, does this imply that we are planning to take business away from our integrator partners? Clearly the answer is no, adding that Compaq’s new services staff would be involved almost exclusively in installing enterprise servers.
