Compaq Computer Corp remained the market leader in Europe in the second quarter according to the Dataquest Europe arm of Gartner Group Inc, but its market share fell to 12.3% from 13.8% a year earlier. IBM Corp gained a little ground in second place , with 9.7%, up from 9.4% and Hewlett-Packard Co, nowhere a couple of years ago, is now number three with 5.5%, up from 5%; Apple Computer Inc was pushed down to fourth place with 4.6%, down from 5.8%; Dell Computer Corp was next with 4.4%, up from 3.2%, but the other big loser was Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG was the other big loser, also with 4.4% but down from 5%; Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA is showing signs of life, with 4.3%, up from 4.2%, but Toshiba Corp is making a big comeback with 3.3%, up from 2.3%, while Digital Equipment Corp’s ambitions to become a major do not look like ever being realized – it was stuck on 2.8%, while AST Research Inc is down to 2.5% from 3.6% last time.
