Well at least Compaq Computer Corp CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer has had the guts to come clean on what the Monterey64 Unix partners clearly see their objective to be. Compaq joined the Monterey64 initiative because it might lead to a unified Unix on Intel, Pfeiffer said, like we have a single NT on Intel. Sun Microsystems Inc (little-endian Solaris x86), Silicon Graphics Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co (big-endian Irix and HP-UX on IA-64 respectively) still stand opposed. However HP has thrown its lot in with the Unix Developers Guide – Programming Interfaces API initiative, a quasi Monterey affair designed to win ISVs and IHVs, which is trying to get its work adopted as an industry standard through The Open Group. Sun is tight-lipped on the issue. UDG-PI is creating API base, ABI, system management, security, software integration, NUMA, cluster, directory integration.
