Compaq Computer Corp’s new chief executive Eckhard Pfeiffer says the company has made deeper job cuts than previously announced: according to the Wall Street Journal, the cuts totalled 1,700, 14% of the workforce, where the company had suggested it would be 1,400, 12%; in Europe, the Scottish factory suffered 190 lost jobs, 40 more than previously announced; Pfeiffer says the intention was to ensure that no more cuts would be needed.
