Compaq Computer Corp and Oracle Corp plan to form the Compaq Business Unit at Oracle, to provide integrated database server systems. They will form an alliance for joint development, collaborative performance engineering, compatibility and reliability testing, market development programmes, and co-ordinated support. The companies said the compatibility testing efforts they undertake will lead to quicker availability of new Oracle products and upgrades of current products, such as Oracle7, for Compaq servers. Compaq and Oracle added that they will devote engineering resources to optimise Oracle software on Compaq servers for maximum performance, reliability and ease-of-ownership. Performance-tuning and other optimisation information, developed by both firms together, will be made available to customers in the form of white papers, technical notes and in electronic format. They will work together over the long term on projects that will streamline installation of Oracle on Compaq servers.
