Compaq Computer Corp has launched new transaction processing software from the Digital Equipment Corp side of its house intended to boost the transaction processing performance of Windows NT. The two products are Application Optimizer and Portable TP for Windows. Application Optimizer 1.1 for Windows NT increases the performance of look, book and cancel data access by managing database access queuing requests and limiting the number of database connections. It pre-allocates the number of processing threads required for database activities such as add, delete and modify, and by tuning, or throttling the number of threads, applications can be run at optimum speed. It works with or without Microsoft Corp’s Internet Information Server and MTS Transaction Server. Customers see up to a 22% increase in performance throughput and 33% reduction in memory usage for MTS applications, according to Compaq. It’s out immediately, and costs $450. Portable TP 1.0 for Windows is a development tool for creating portable TP applications using IIS and MTS services. Applications written on NT can be recompiled and deployed on NT, Unix or DEC’s OpenVMS. It uses the X/Open-compliant STDL Structured Transaction Definition Language as a high-level language for developing distributed TP applications.
