Compaq Computer Corp said it would soon beat Indian PC manufacturer HCL Corp to the number one PC firm in India. In 1996-97 Compaq sold PCs worth $90m in the Indian market. Its rivals, HCL sold 88,000 computers in 1996-97 (July-June) and has been selling 10,000 computers every month since then. Compaq has no immediate plan of setting up a manufacturing base in India. According to the International Data Corp, Compaq has been ranked as the leading multinational brand in India, since 1995.
