Just a month after Compaq Computer Corp launched its so-called affordable performance (AP) workstation systems (CI No 3,427), the company has added another system to the range. The Windows NT-based AP200 runs on Intel Corp’s 350MHz to 400 MHz Pentium II processors and, according to Compaq, provides users with workstation power at PC prices. The new machines have two and three dimensional graphics capabilities. They also have six PCI expansion slots and five bays for configuration as either a minitower or a desktop. Compaq is aiming the workstations at mainstream computer aided design, architectural engineering and construction, financial trading, digital content creation, geographical information systems applications and select electronic design automation and software development applications. The AP200 will be available by the end of the month, with prices starting from $2,350.
