Hungry for joint ventures, Compania Telefonica Nacional de Espana SA is now in discussions with Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd on building a plant to manufacture optical fibre in Spain: any venture would likely be majority-owned by the Japanese company, and the talks follow an aborted attempt at a similar venture with Corning Glass Works, which was aborted because of plunging prices for optical cable.
