A major communications company is to announce acquisition of a major computer company today, and while trying to guess these things is a mug’s game, the temptation is irresistible: first thought was Case Group Plc making a poison pill acquisition, but Case says it ain’t them, so the spotlight turns to STC Plc as the possible predator, which makes Computer Consoles Inc the likely prey – ICL sells Consoles’ Unix systems and office software, STC sells the directory enquiries systems, and Consoles chief was tipped as a possible chief executive for ICL a couple of years back – and ICL needs a substantial US presence; failing STC, try GEC Plessey Telecommunications, said to be looking to buy in the network management arena – but identifying a target is not so easy, since it is said to be a computer company – ITL Information Technology Plc maybe, or Ferranti Computer Systems perhaps, but neither sounds likely.
