Ed Vaizey is urging business, social enterprises, individuals, and charities to get involved with the technology4good awards, with nominations opening tomorrow.
The national competition attracted over 250 entries in its launch last year.
Big names in technology are already on board to sponsor the event with BT leading the way. Technology4Good is the project of e-Accessibility charity, Ability.Net, which aims to give individuals and businesses with an interest in accessibility best practice, a thorough understanding of digital inclusion.
The awards given are made from scrap computers and other recycled materials.
"As the leading experts in e-accessibility for people with disabilities, we are acutely aware of the empowering influence of digital technology," said AbilityNet CEO Nigel Lewis, in a statement last year. "Whether at home, at work or in education, full access to computers and the Internet can be life changing – economically, socially and psychologically."
Ed Vaizey, Communications Minister, is a big supporter for the award scheme and believes that embracing digital technology opens the door for new opportunities.
"Digital technology has changed the way we do so much and has opened up a world of new possibilities," said Vaizey. "Staying in touch with family and friends, shopping in far-off stores and accessing essential services have become so much easier thanks to the Internet."
Vaizey believes the Technology4Good awards can provide a lucrative way for innovative ventures to help upcoming markets grow.
"Some of those who could benefit most from the digital revolution are currently being excluded. We must ensure technology is accessible to as many people as possible," said Vaizey. "The Technology4Good Awards are an excellent way of recognising new and innovative ideas that will grow new markets and deliver the benefits of the digital world to more people."
The minds behind the UK Technology4Good Awards hope it will encourage the celebration of ways technology contributes to innovation, community impact, volunteering, and fundraising. Those wanting to enter have a deadline date of 18 May 2012.
