General Electric Co’s NBC broadcasting unit has joined forces with Philips Consumer Electronics Co, Thomson Consumer Electronics Inc and the David Sarnoff Research Center agreed to develop a common direction for high-definition television in the US: they have formed a consortium to develop and support a research programme that would first introduce a new wide screen, movie-like system with improved picture resolution – Advanced Compatible Television, in parallel developing a full high-definition TV system that would not offer compatibility.
