COMMERCE DEPARTMENT TO SET UP ENCRYPTION ADVISORY BODY

By CBR Staff Writer

The US Commerce Department will establish a committee to advise it on the effects of its controversial computer encryption policy. The President’s Export Council Subcommitee on Encryption will be composed of around 25 members drawn from state and local enforcement agencies as well as the private sector, according to Sue Eckert, assistant Sectrary of Commerce for Export Administration. It will be an advisory body to provide input to policy, rather than be a forum to debate the merits of the current policy.
