Current intelligence on the forthcoming F models in IBM’s 3090 line gleaned by Reuters from a round of the analysts differs little from what was previously known: the Fs, expected next month, are seen as a second round of mid-life kickers for the 3090 line ahead of announcement of Summit, offering more than twice the uniprocessor performance, expected in late 1989; the Fs are expected to offer 20% more performance than the Es, putting a 38 MIPS rating on the 3090-200F, at about 12% higher price, but analysts are not enthusiastic that they will lead to a big boost to IBM’s fortunes, saying that users were buying 3090s second hand or leasing them ahead of Summit, the single CPU performance of which is tipped to be in the 45 to 50 MIPS range.
