Commenting on those figures last week (CI No 1,108), Mentor Graphics Corp, Beaverton, Oregon chairman Thomas Bruggere declares that It has been an excellent quarter and an outstanding year – while we expected 1988 to be a very good year for us, these results surpass even our most optimistic forecasts: fourth quarter multi-million dollar orders from companies as diverse as Apple Computer and NCR in the US, Amalgamated Wireless Australia Pty and Samsung Co of Korea are very gratifying and provide great momentum as we enter 1989; Mentor enters 1989 with record order and record backlog positions in all geographic areas, generating cash for heavy investment in research and development – $34m last year, much more than any other company in our industry; it now has 1,700 people and 17,000 workstations installed.
