The 802.11 wireless networks will be rolled out to most of Tully’s 98 stores in Washington, California, Oregon and Idaho, using several different network providers that Cometa plans to name later this month.

The company, formed in December with funding from IBM Corp, AT&T Corp, Intel Corp and two venture capitalists, has already signed up fast food chain McDonalds, which plans to have several hundred locations wireless-enabled by the end of the year.

Cometa launched last year with the ambitious plan to create a 20,000-location network of Wi-Fi hotspots. The company identified restaurant and retail chains, gas stations and airports as likely locations.
