Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), a unit of the Exelon, an electric utility firm, has selected Minneapolis-based technology consulting firm N’compass Solutions (N’compass), to provide services, through energy efficiency incentives, to business customers throughout the greater Chicago area and to optimise the efficiencies of their data centres.

ComEd and N’compass will offer ComEd business customers N’compass’ Data Centre Efficiency Program, a process designed to drive down overall energy consumption within both facility and IT components and help optimise data centre operating performance.

N’compass analyses data centre equipment, layout, temperature, power levels, airflow, trends, and delivers an all-inclusive report that identifies sources of inefficiency, recommended improvements, and the costs/benefits for those improvements.

ComEd senior program manager Ryan Stoianowski said through the Smart Ideas energy efficiency incentives; ComEd is committed to helping customers with data centres lower their energy costs.

"We anticipate the demand for energy to power data centres will continue to increase significantly in the coming decade as more businesses, especially in the area of health care, expand the strategic use of IT to drive business growth," Stoianowski said.

N’compass CEO Gerry Hansen said as companies demand more from their data centres, such as always-on applications, reliable data delivery, sound security, and sheer horsepower, their costs will continue to climb.

"That’s where we, with ComEd, can help Chicago businesses lower their costs by identifying opportunities to lower their energy costs," Hansen said.
