Colt Telecom Group Plc, the London-based telecommunications company, has won a license to build and operate a fiber optic network in the Swiss city of Zurich. Colt claims to be the first company to be awarded a license to operate its own network by the Swiss Federal Office of Telecommunications. The company is building an optical fiber Synchronous Digital Hierarchy network, and will apply for an operators license after the European telecoms market is liberalized in January 1998. Colt has set up similar networks in London, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Berlin and Paris.
