Business comms and IT managed services provider Colt has unveiled a new approach to data centre construction, which the firms says can build and deliver large-scale data centres in just four months.
The Colt Modular Data Centre operates on a production line basis, so all components, including power and cooling elements, will be constructed and tested in approved manufacturing facilities, before being shipped to its new location, which can be one of Colt’s own managed data centres or a customer’s own location.
The prefab data centres can be built in 500m2 increments up to any size the customer wishes. Colt says that this new approach to data centre design and delivery means projects can be delivered in just four months, approximately a third of the time required for a conventional build, the firm said.
The new firm will sit within Colt’s Data Centre Services (DCS) division, a new branch set up to offer customers large-scale data centre services and facilities.
"For our customers, the data centre facility is one of the most critical components in ensuring the continuity and integrity of their IT services and operations," said Rakesh Bhasin, CEO Colt. "The formation of Colt Data Centre Services, and the launch of Colt’s Modular Data Centres, will redefine the way in which our customers can address their growing need for high quality data centre space, substantially reducing deployment times as well as helping them to minimise the environmental and cost impacts associated with the consumption of power.
Speaking to CBR about the announcement, Akber Jaffer, general manager, Colt Data Centre Services, said that the move was a natural one for the firm considering its heritage: "We manage 19 data centres around Europe, we’re already in that space. What goes in the rack – the server, operating systems, and database – is a business that we’re already in and related to that is the network. So the data centre and the network that goes in it is part of our core business, as is IT infrastructure."
