COGNOS ABANDONS USER INTERFACES, TARGETS BROWSERS

By CBR Staff Writer

Graphical user interface builders are dead, long live browsers. Cognos Software Inc told us it is putting most of its interface research and development effort into wiring up the RealObjects component-based application development tool and Axiant proprietary language for browsers. It is also putting all of its eggs in the Microsoft Corp basket as far as distributed objects and transactions are concerned. On the RealObjects side it plans to use Network OLE and Active X as the middleware for inter-object communication. It will use Viper, Microsoft’s forthcoming transaction processing system, to supply client-server communication and distribution. Product release is way off in 1997, according to the company.
