Carlsbad, California-based Coded Communications has introduced a mobile computer terminal system designed to integrate the DataVision Head-Up Display developed by Hughes Aircraft Co and marketed by Delco Electronics Corp. The unit enables drivers to read messages through a transparent screen while driving. Called the MCT-2500, it features MS-DOS or OS/2 operating systems with an 80386 or 80486 processor, internal radio frequency modem and PCMCIA card technology. The CPU is remotely mounted, leaving just the external keyboard and Head-Up Display to be mounted in the front seat area. The combiner, which acts like a screen for the overhead projection unit, is located next to the rear view mirror. This enables the driver to maintain eye contact with the road and still read messages and information. The Head-Up Display technology, originally developed for use in military aircraft, has been applied to police, fire and other public safety markets. It enables officers to maintain visual contact with a suspect or avert a potentially dangerous situation while parked.
