Cobalt Networks Inc has confirmed the widely-leaked launch of two new servers (CI No 3,440). Both products testify to the price-performance possibilities of open source software. The rack-mounted Cobalt RaQ is pre-loaded with Linux, sendmail and the Apache server, yet retails for less than $1000. The CacheQube is priced at $1899 but promises to reduce bandwidth demand by as much as 60%. Targeted at internet service providers, the servers were announced at Internet World Summer ’98 in Chicago.
