COALS TO NEWCASTLE: OKI TO LICENSE SAMSUNG 16Ms…

By CBR Staff Writer

In a wry example of the pupil teaching the master, a South Korean company in the shape of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is transferring leading edge technology – its design for 16M-bit memory chips, to a Japanese company, Oki Electric Industry Co. Samsung said it would provide production technology for 16M-bit synchronous dynamics to Oki in return for royalties. Samsung Electronics says it did $1,750m in semiconductor sales in 1992 and it hopes to increase that to $2,375m this year. Oki’s semiconductor sales were $976m in 1992.
