The co-founder of Russian search engine Yandex has died after a battle with cancer.

Ilya Segalovich died aged 48 after being diagnosed with stomach cancer last year, falling into a coma on Thursday, the company said.

Segalovich, who set up the firm with school friend Arkady Volozh in 1997, went to hospital on Wednesday with severe head pains before his sudden deterioration.

Yandex director Volozh said he had been responding to chemotherapy treatment but then developed cancer in his brain, leading to his death.

Yandex is one of the biggest Internet companies in Russia, valued at £6.5bn with more than double Google’s market share in the country.

On a tribute page set up by Yandex, Segalovich is celebrated as a "friend, colleague, teacher and hilarious clown."
