VMware moves onto G-Cloud 6

Virtualisation vendor targets public bodies' app deployment.

By Jimmy Nicholls

VMware is preparing to push its clouds service through the British government cloud service G-Cloud 6 framework.

Public bodies seeking a cloud service will now be able to purchase vCloud Air through the framework, allowing applications and workloads to be hosted as part of a hybrid cloud setup.

Andy Tait, head of public sector strategy at VMware, said: "Many government services — such as passport processing or tax returns — have significant peaks and troughs throughout the year; yet have stringent data security requirements all year round.

"vCloud Air enables the public sector to keep business-critical applications in-house and also take advantage of the enormous scalability of public clouds securely, without having to invest in new tools, skills or under-used on-premises capacity."

The launch comes as obligations burgeon for public sector organisations and their contractors, both around standards of cybersecurity and data sovereignty.

"Now that vCloud Air is government-ready, public sector and government organizations have the flexibility to run applications wherever they like across their IT infrastructure, with the reassurance that all data information remains local in-country and adheres to sovereignty laws," Tait added.
