Too much data for cloud analytics? AWS will send you a box

News: Cloud goes old school as AWS offers to provide a storage box to handle large data sets.

By James Nunns

If you have too much data to send over the network to be analysed in the AWS cloud, then fear not because Amazon will send you a physical storage box into which you can dump your data and send back to the firm for analysis.

The move will come as part of the Space Needle project, which would see the company head further into the world of data analytics.

Although it is expected to include a feature that will enable the fast transferring or copying of data to AWS, in cases where it would take a long time to transfer data via the Internet, the company will supply a storage device.

There is no word currently on how exactly this would work, what sort of storage device it would be or how it would be sent.

The Space Needle project, is expected to be announced at the company’s conference re:Invent. It would see the cloud provider aim for the business intelligence market.

Although it already offers some analytics services like Kinesis and Elastic MapReduce, this could see it competing with the likes of IBM, SAP, Microsoft and others.

With customers already storing large amounts of data with AWS, this move by the company would give its customers less of a reason to move data around for analytics purposes. However, it could also further tie them in to AWS.

One of the challenges AWS will have to face will be how it connects to data that isn’t stored with them. With re:Invent this week, some announcements could be made in this area.
