ServiceNow lands NASA’s largest cloud project to date

News: Over 50 services defined, structured and automated.

By Joao Lima

Finding water on Mars did not solve NASA’s IT legacy and services problems but the cloud might just be the answer.

The company has selected ServiceNow to deliver services to 40,000 civil servants and contractors, and its research and educational communities.

The space agency said its Shared Services Centre (NSSC) wants to use the cloud for its employees and partners to request services.

The NSSC also consolidated its systems on ServiceNow’s cloud-based service management platform to stop managing hardware and legacy software, and focus on apps that work together across the entire organisation.

ServiceNow said that NASA has defined, structured and automated more than 50 services for IT, human resources, finance, grants, procurement and other support functions.

Steve Alfieris, VP of federal at ServiceNow, said: "More than 75% of the government’s IT budget is spent on maintaining legacy systems [according to Nutanix Federal], challenging agencies to align with the requirements of the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act."

The company said the roll-out is one of the first large-scale cloud projects at NASA.
