SAP kicks football into the cloud

Solution powered by HANA will provide analytical insights.

By James Nunns

SAP has developed the first sports-specific cloud solution, the Sports One solution for football, which will be powered by the HANA platform.

The goal is to provide a unified platform to manage teams and players, as well as handle analytical insights to help optimise performance for football.

Stefan Wagner, general manager, Media, Sports & Entertainment, SAP SE, said: "Competition is growing increasingly fierce, while athletic performance is reaching a peak. Our customers are looking for new ways to go beyond these limits."

"We believe that SAP technology can open up such untapped potential, providing entirely new insights for better performance. On a single platform, SAP Sports One helps teams and organizations make better decisions to bring the best out in their players – and win."

Users will have access to components that will assist with team management, training planning, player fitness management and performance analysis.

The solution is an evolution of what was used by the German Soccer Association during its preparations for the world cup in Brazil.

It is designed to also help track the detailed histories of injuries and performance diagnostics which will help to build up a comprehensive file on each player, and potentially reduce injuries.

Data can be integrated from content providers such as Opta Sports, Daten AG and Prozone Sports to help build data for postmatch analysis.

While initially aimed at football, SAP is planning to follow up this release with moves into hockey and further sports over the next few years.
