Docker’s continuing popularity has seen Oracle join the ever growing number of companies choosing to integrate with it.
Oracle plans to integrate support for the technology into its Solaris Zones, as it attempts to push Solaris as an enterprise platform for building cloud infrastructure.
Solaris Zones has been a feature of the Unix-based Solaris operating system for a number of years. Oracle is clearly interested in keeping up with the rest of the industry which is adopting the container technology.
While the company hopes to increase the value of Solaris with Docker for enterprises, much of the Docker adoption has been pushed by SMB’s.
David Marshall, founder of VMblog and virtualisation industry expert, said: "With Docker, we’re seeing a different adoption model from recent technology initiatives such as the cloud, which was in large part top-down, pushed by executive CIO initiatives or financial management."
"Docker usage, on the other hand, is being driven from the middle out, either by middle management or grassroots efforts."
Big Red will be hoping to get into the Docker game just at the right point as enterprises start to see its value and adopt in larger numbers.

In recent months companies such as CenturyLink and CA Technologies have announced better integration with Docker tools, while companies such as Google are pushing ahead with container orchestration with Kubernetes.
While plenty of companies have jumped onto the Docker bandwagon, concerns have been raised about its security model. Oracle will be hoping that its mature technology will be able to secure any of the container’s security issues.
Native Docker support will bring the ability to use Docker API’s and its compatible tools to package, manage and orchestrate containers – with the security and technical benefits of Solaris Zones.
Oracle isn’t alone in basing its containers on home grown technology, Microsoft is another company that is doing similarly. The company will be adding Docker support to its next version of Windows Server.
Despite the announcement, Oracle has not released a date or time frame as to when this will be available.
