A new report has revealed that worldwide cloud traffic will more than quadruple by the end of 2019 driven by consumers, mobility and and Internet of Everything (IoE).
Annual global cloud traffic is expected to reach 8.6 zettabytes by the end of 2019, from 2.1 ZB per year in 2014. It will account for 83% of total data centre traffic, according to the Cisco Global Cloud Index.
The report projects annual global data centre traffic to reach 10.4 ZB by 2019, up from 3.4 ZB in 2014.
In four years, North America will have both the highest cloud traffic volume (3.6 ZB) and highest data centre traffic volume (4.5 ZB).
Cisco also projects that overall data centre workloads will more than double between 2014 and 2019, but cloud workloads will more than triple over the same period.
According to the report, public cloud is growing at a faster rate than private cloud. By 2019, 56% of cloud workloads will be in public cloud data centres, up from 30% in 2014. About 44% will be in private cloud data centres, down from 70% last year.
The data created by the IoE is expected to reach 507.5 ZB per year by 2019, up from 134.5 ZB in 2014. It is 49 times more than the projected amount of data centre traffic in four years.

About 55% of Internet users will use personal cloud storage by 2019 and 51% of stored data will be on non-PC devices such as smartphones and tablets. Currently 73% of data is stored on PCs.
Cisco vice president of service provider marketing Doug Webster said: "Enterprise and government organizations are moving from test cloud environments to trusting clouds with their mission-critical workloads.
"At the same time, consumers continue to expect on-demand, anytime access to their content and services nearly everywhere. This creates a tremendous opportunity for cloud operators, which will play an increasingly relevant role in the communications industry ecosystem."
