IBM, Nvidia gives power boost to virtual desktop applications in cloud

News: It will allow its customers to perform computer intensive tasks in cloud in pay-as-you-go basis.

IBM is offering Nvidia Grid Tesla M60 GPU in cloud to make compute intensive tasks easier in virtual desktops.

It will allow companies of all different sizes to access the latest virtual desktop applications with no compromise in performance, while doing compute-intensive workloads like graphics-accelerated applications, big data analytics, HPC, AI and cognitive computing.

It will allow customers to deploy more powerful cloud servers for doing complex computing tasks including data analytics, graphics, energy exploration and deep learning/artificial intelligence.

Jerry Gutierrez, HPC leader for SoftLayer, an IBM Company said: "With NVIDIA GPU technology on IBM Cloud, we are one step closer to offering supercomputing performance on a pay-as-you-go basis, which makes this new approach to tackling big data problems accessible to customers of all sizes.

"We’re at an inflection point in our industry, where GPU technology is opening the door for the next wave of breakthroughs across multiple industries."

Tesla M60 with NVIDIA GRID virtualisation technology can speed up virtualised desktop applications like CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) including AutoCAD.

With the availability of the technology in cloud, companies can used the GPU resources on IBM Cloud on an on-demand basis.

It will help reduce the processing time to hours in comparison to the use of CPU-only based servers.

Nvidia vice president and general manager Jim McHugh said: "For the first time, businesses can deliver workstation-class graphics-intensive applications from the cloud along with high performance computing."

GPUs work in conjunction with a server’s CPU to speed up performance of applications as CPU shifts the compute-intensive tasks of the application to the GPU, which processes large blocks of data at one time rather than sequentially boosting the overall performance in a server environment.

The other Nvidia GPU offerings in IBM Cloud include Tesla K80 and Tesla K10 GPU.
