IBM takes Cleversafe object storage platform and makes it cloud as-a-service

Technology giant IBM has launched a new cloud object storage service to manage massive amounts of digital information across hybrid clouds.

By CBR Staff Writer

The new service, IBM Cloud Object Storage, which is derived from the company’s acquisition of Cleversafe, is aimed at redefining the security, availability and economics of storing, managing and accessing the data on hybrid cloud platforms.

The new IBM Cloud Object Storage storage-as-a-service offerings allow customers to quickly and easily scale large unstructured data volumes across on-premises systems as well as public and private clouds.

IBM Cloud senior vice president Robert LeBlanc said: “As clients continue to move massive workloads to hybrid clouds there is a need for an easier, more secure and economical way to store and manage mounting volumes of digital information.”

The company said that the new service demonstrated over 25% lower costs for the capacity, environment and locations compared to a similar object storage capacity running on a competitive cloud.

IBM Cloud Object Storage is built on a storage solution called SecureSlice from CleversafeCleversafe.

SecureSlice combines encryption and erasure coding to enhance security and information dispersal, which in turn improves data availability.

The solutions can enable clients to meet their data compliance security needs and maintain access to critical data even in case of a regional outage.

It said: “Because of these innovations, IBM Cloud Object Storage can tolerate even catastrophic regional outages without interruption of access to data or the need for customer intervention. Continuous availability is inherent in the architecture.”

IBM said that the capabilities also do not require making expensive copies of data, leading to cost reduction for clients.

IBM Cloud Object Storage is offered in two public, multi-tenant services such as Cross Region Service and Regional Service.

While Cross Region Service sends the sliced data to a minimum of three geographically dispersed regions across IBM Cloud data centers, Regional Service holds the data in multiple data centers in a given region.

The new services on or off-premises support Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift interfaces for enhanced programming flexibility.

The company rolled out the service of enterprise customers across IBM Cloud data centres in the US and Europe. It plans to launch the service in the Asia Pacific region in December.

Customer experience platform Bitly has migrated one billion datasets to IBM Cloud Object Storage.
