IBM boosts open source & cloud data with Compose buy

Compose’s database offerings will expand IBM’s Bluemix platform.

By CBR Staff Writer

IBM has acquired California-based database as a service (DBaaS) startup Compose to accelerate developer productivity and innovation around open source as well as cloud data services.

Founded in 2010, Compose provides MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, and DBaaS offerings for web and mobile app developers.

It provides auto-scaling, production-ready databases to help software development teams in the rapid deployment of data services.

The company offers an enhanced framework to IBM for delivering highly sought after, production ready, cloud database services for developers.

Compose helped several clients across various industries, including retail, IoT, and ecommerce to create more than 100,000 databases.

IBM Cloud Data Services general manager Derek Schoettle said: "Compose’s breadth of database offerings will expand IBM’s Bluemix platform for the many app developers seeking production-ready databases built on open source.

"Compose furthers IBM’s commitment to ensuring developers have access to the right tools for the job by offering the broadest set of DBaaS service and the flexibility of hybrid cloud deployment."
