HPE, Samsung target telcos with NFV tie up

Partnership will see Samsung join the HPE OpenNFV Partner Program.

By James Nunns

Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Samsung are working together to provide carriers with integrated network functions virtualisation infrastructure (NFV) and virtual network functions solutions.

The aim of the partnership is to help carriers and customers that are looking to implement pre-tested and integrated multi-vendor solutions.

The collaboration will see Samsung’s carrier network merged with HPE’s telecommunications expertise in order to accelerate carrier moves from proprietary appliances to cloud-based networks enabled by NFV.

Woojune Kim, VP and Head of Strategy Group in Next Generation communication Team at Samsung Electronics, said: “Samsung is confident in maintaining its stance as a pioneer in delivering advanced technologies required to lead the next generation market, like open ecosystem based NFV.”

As part of the collaboration Samsung will join the HPE OpenNFV Partner Program as a carrier-grade network equipment provider.

The program is an ecosystem of NFV technology, application and service partners that have tested and validated solutions on ETSI-compliant HPE OpenNFV infrastructure.

Werner Schaefer, VP & GM, NFV, HPE, said: “HPE and Samsung have already collaborated successfully behind the scenes on NFV projects that are transforming communications service providers and their old school networks to agile telco cloud environments ready to satisfy the ever increasing demands of their customers while reducing cost.”

Samsung is set to take the lead when it comes to providing carrier-grade VNFs for mobile networks, such as virtualised EPC, virtualised IMS and HPE will help CSPs to bridge from their current infrastructures to NFV by providing the OpenNFV platform and NFV platform and management orchestration solutions.

The partnership will also include a joint go-to-market strategy with ready-to-install third party solutions. This means that CSPs will be able to choose from various third party solutions that have already been verified by the program.

The two companies will also provide CSPs with NFV systems integration services in order to speed up the whole process of implementation and remove some of the pain from it.
