Great Western Railway (GWR) is using VMware and Rackspace technology to revamp its online presence.

GWR chose the VMware Managed Virtualisation offering from the managed cloud company to boost the reliability of its website infrastructure, which had struggled to keep up with demand during the busy period from October to February.

The infrastructure will run on physical and virtual servers in Rackspace’s data centre in Sussex. Rackspace will provide an on-call Lead Engineer with specific expertise in GWR’s servers.

With the aim of being the top UK digital retailer for online train travel ticketing, the train company also overhauled its ecommerce presence with digital agency ORM and digital marketing software vendor Sitecore.

One of the aims of the project is to create a more personalised experience for individuals using big data analytics. Sitecore’s contribution builds a profile of customers, creating tailored suggestions and features for each individual.
