Docker, Chef & vSphere given CenturyLink touch

Projects will provide developer assistance for open-source tools.

By James Nunns

CenturyLink’s contribution to open-source is growing with developer assistance aimed projects with Docker, Chef and vSphere.

The projects include a Chef provisioning driver for vSphere which is aimed to simplify the provisioning process of Chef nodes on VMware’s vSphere infrastructure.

Its open-source work towards Lorry.io is a tool designed for creating, composing and validating Docker Compose YAML files. The purpose of this is to make it easier to share and deploy applications composed of Docker containers.

The final project, ImageLayers.io, will enable the visualisation of Docker images and the layers that compose them. It will enable developers to see how each command in the Dockerfile contributes to the final image.

Despite the company’s cloud platform being proprietary, the company has stressed the importance of open-source in the cloud ecosystem.

Jared Wray, SVP, platforms, CenturyLink, said: "We believe it’s critical to be active in the open-source community, building flexible and feature-rich tools that enable new possibilities for developers."
