A new report has found a 45% increase in application attacks against cloud deployments this year, when compared to attacks that took place last year.

The number has been revealed by Alert Logic in its ‘Fall 2015 Cloud Security Report’, which also highlighted that the strong adoption of cloud computing platforms has prompted cyber criminals to follow companies to the cloud.

The type of cyber-attacks carried out against a company is not determined by where its IT infrastructure resides, rather the determining factor is how it interacts with its customers and the size of its online presence.

According to Alert Logic, by understanding the Cyber Kill Chain, companies can gain insight into where cyber criminals are more likely to breach and how they can be stopped.

This representation of the attack flow is likely to help organisations target a defence strategy based on the way attackers approach infiltrating their businesses.

Alert Logic Security Services vice president Will Semple said: "While cybercriminals are increasingly targeting cloud deployments, on-premises deployments are still being targeted at the same frequency as they always were.

"The key to protecting your critical data is being knowledgeable about how and where along the Cyber Kill Chain attackers infiltrate systems and to employ the right security tools, practices and resource investment to combat them."
