‘Cloud-first’ Robin smartphone smashes Kickstarter target

Over $600,000 raised as buyers flock to a device that can transcend normal storage limits.

A Kickstarter campaign for the world’s ‘only cloud-first smartphone‘ has reached its funding target.

At the time of writing, total funding had reached over $600,000, far surpassing the target of $500,000. Reaching the target will allow Nextbit to place a minimum order with manufacturers.

Costing around $350 for the basic version, Robin, launched by Nextbit, is designed to transcend the storage problems of smartphones by integrating the cloud into the latest version of the Android operating system.

The device claims to "adapt to your storage needs" and optimise the space on the phone, learning which apps you use and the space required to run them smoothly. Anything else is uploaded to the cloud to free up space and can be retrieved instantly.

It also backs up apps and photos whenever power and wi-fi are available.

In terms of other specifications, it runs on a Snapdragon 808 processor, with a 13MP main camera and 5MP front-facing camera. It has a 1080p 5.2" screen and a 2680 mAh battery.

"We made a smartphone that brings the power of the cloud to everyone with an integrated cloud OS. We made it because we’re tired of waiting on others," the ad claims.
