Citrix & Nutanix pave way for VDI deployment

Companies will work together to ease of deployment.

By James Nunns

Nutanix and Citrix are working together more closely as the two look to make their virtual desktop infrastructure solutions more attractive to organisations.

Nutanix’s hyper converged infrastructure platform and Citrix’s XenDesktop and XenApp will all get greater attention, starting with Citrix certifying the Xtreme Computing Platform running the Acropolis Hypervisor from Nutanix.

The two companies have provided additional certifications and will also be aligning their technologies, with the goal of enabling customers that run both platforms to go to either company for support.

Simply this is a way of making it easier to deploy the two products together, with the two remaining independent.

It will be hoping that by leveraging Acropolis and a Citrix workspace, datacentre and desktop teams will be able bring back IT focus to the end user, instead of focusing on a misalignment between infrastructure and virtualisation applications.

The collaboration will mean that joint customers can deploy a virtual desktop infrastructure in a shorter period of time, without the need for specialised storage skills. Scaling up a pilot deployment will be achievable without affecting the users’ experience, according to Nutanix.

The reduced impact is due to the company’s cluster gaining extra compute and storage resources every time a new node is added. This means that there won’t be a reduction in performance as the cluster grows.

Bill Burley, VP,GM, Windows App Delivery at Citrix. "Working with Nutanix, we are providing additional infrastructure options for deploying XenApp and XenDesktop that will help accelerate customer time to value, and drive even greater efficiencies and success in app and desktop virtualisation projects."

The Acropolis hypervisor solution was only introduced to the market a couple of months ago, prior to that, supporting a Citrix VDI required a hypervisor from another hypervisor organisation. In the end, the collaboration will make the solution more accessible to end users.
