Cisco to buy Cloud API specialist

Tropo buy will strengthen cloud collaboration portfolio.

By James Nunns

Cisco is moving to acquire Tropo in a move designed to ease communication integration within cloud applications.

Tropo, a privately held company which specialises in building cloud API platforms will strengthen Cisco’s real-time embedded communications.

Hilton Romanski, SVP, business development, Cisco, wrote on the company blog: "Tropo’s robust APIs and its 200K+-strong developer network gives Cisco the ability to extend the power of its collaboration technologies to third-party applications and end-point."

Tropo’s technology is designed to enable developers to build applications that integrate into service provider’s existing communications infrastructure. It also developes APIs which allow IT departments to build business applications to reach end-users through voice and SMS.

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2015 with Tropo joining the Collaboration Technology Group. Financial details have not been disclosed.
